Histoire et légende du Pré de Madame Carle

PMC-aujourSitué en amont d’Ailefroide, ce site ferme la vallée de la Vallouise. Aujourd’hui, c’est une plaine de dépôts glaciaires et d’alluvions torrentiels, zone caillouteuse, agrémentée de quelques mélèzes et vernes, balayées  par les eaux de fonte des glaciers qui donnent naissance au torrent de St Pierre. Malgré cette prédominance minérale, c’est cependant un endroit magnifique, haut lieux touristique du massif ou l’on peut sentir la présence des glaciers, Blanc et Noir, invisibles mais tous proches et aussi entrapercevoir les plus hautes cimes du massif des Ecrins. Le Pré de Madame Carle est, sans conteste possible, le lieu le plus célèbre et le plus visité de la Vallouise. On put l’atteindre en voiture dès 1934. Aujourd’hui, son immense parking permet d’accueillir les milliers de visiteurs qui s’y pressent entre juillet et août.

Au début du XIXe siècle, le glacier Blanc et le glacier Noir se chevauchaient vers l’actuel emplacement du refuge Cézanne est cette zone devait être encore moins hospitalière qu’aujourd’hui. Sur certaines  cartes de l’époque, on nommait ce lieu la Grande Sagne, autrement dit le grand lieu humide.

Il faut remonter au XVIe siècle pour trouver des récits parlant d’une prairie fertile et verdoyante. Il faut voir qu’à cette époque, le climat était beaucoup plus chaud et les glaciers, Blanc et Noir, devaient être cantonnés sur leurs plateaux supérieurs. La formation même du site remonte dit on encore plus loin dans le temps, et résulterait du comblement d’un ancien lac glaciaire.

Les chroniques de la Vallouise indiquent que le Pré existait bel et bien, là où il y a maintenant, que des cailloux. C’était un bel alpage qui faisait partie des biens (Bâtie de la Vallouise et ses appartenances) donnés en 1505 par le Roi Louis XII à Geoffroy Carle, Président du parlement du Dauphiné. A sa mort, son épouse Louise Sereyne, originaire de la vallée, administra ses biens et aurait donné ainsi son nom à ce lieu. Une autre tradition attribue ce nom à la belle-fille de ce même Geoffroy Carle, qui au début du XVIème siècle avait été le précepteur de la fille du roi Louis XII. En effet, il aurait acheté en 1510 l’ancien château de la Bâtie des Vigneaux avec ses terres. Son fils Antoine Carle mourut jeune, laissant une veuve et 10 enfants. A leur majorité, ils se partagèrent les biens paternels et laissèrent à leur mère, cette parcelle de terre qui prit le nom de Pré de Mme Carle. Mais beaucoup d’autres légendes courent encore autour de ce pré notamment celle qui voudrait qu’ait péri ici, tirée par un cheval emballé sur ordre de son époux, l’épouse un peu volage de Geoffroy Carle, le premier président du Parlement de Grenoble … La légende contée
