Cette histoire est connue dans le Briançonnais. La légende se situe en hiver, aux environs du col du Lautaret qui culmine à plus de 2000m d’altitude ; lorsque les rigueurs de la saison transforment la délicieuse balade connue en été, en une périlleuse et parfois fatale expédition. En effet, lorsque la tourmente se déchaîne, rendant la visibilité quasiment nulle, la route sillonne dangereusement entre des parois de neige formées par les congères et la chaussée est aussi glissante qu’une patinoire. Nombreux sont les gens qui ont du abandonner leur voiture ensevelie sous la neige et poursuivre leur chemin à pied, avec le risque de finir congelé jusqu’au prochain printemps …

Alors qu’elles étaient concentrées sur la conduite de leur véhicule, une incroyable apparition les surprenait au détour d’un virage. Une dame vêtue d’une robe et d’un châle dont la blancheur immaculée rappelait celle de la neige, faisait de l’auto-stop appuyée contre une paroi glacée. Troublés et peinés par l’apparent dénuement de cet étrange fantôme, nombreux sont ceux qui lui offraient l’hospitalité dans la réconfortante chaleur de leur voiture. Son visage était entièrement dissimulé par son châle et toutes les tentatives de conversation s’avéraient vaines, elle gardait obstinément le silence. Les automobilistes reprenaient alors leur conduite et la nécessité de se concentrer leur faisait momentanément oublier leur passagère; et le voyage se poursuivait toujours sans dommage. Dès la tourmente terminée et le col franchi, ils ne pouvaient que constater la disparition de la Dame …

Dans les auberges de la région, on raconte que la Dame Blanche du Lautaret protège les automobilistes qui la prennent à leur bord. Quant à ceux qui l’ignorent, leur voyage se poursuit au péril de leur vie. On raconte aussi que certains ont été internés en asile psychiatrique, à Laragne, pour avoir relaté cette histoire …

Caractéristiques des histoires et légendes sur les Dames Blanches :

Généralement, les dames blanches se matérialisent toujours au même endroit (routes, ponts, chemins, grottes, …). Elles tirent leur nom de leur vêtement ou de la lumière qui émane d’elles. L’apparition se manifeste souvent au milieu de la nuit, heures propices aux fantômes. Elles représentent généralement un esprit en peine, une âme triste, errant sur le lieu d’un drame et ce, jusqu’au jugement dernier. Dans certaines histoires, la dame blanche apparait comme rusée et malicieuse, voulant quelque fois se venger en jouant des tours et en égarant les voyageurs.
